Import taxes in Kenya
Budget for these charges on top of the truck price and freight:
- VAT 16%, charged on the customs value plus duty and levies
- Import Declaration Fee (IDF) 2.5% of the customs value
- Railway Development Levy (RDL) 2% of the customs value
Import duty follows the EAC Common External Tariff for the truck's HS code. Rates for vehicles under headings 8702 to 8704 changed on 1 July 2026, so ask your clearing agent for the current rate before you order.

What to get right before you order
- 01Right-hand drive is required — specify RHD on the order.
- 02KEBS PVoC applies to used vehicles; arrange it pre-shipment.
- 03Refurbished trucks are used vehicles: KEBS applies KS 1515:2000, which bars vehicles older than eight years from first registration. For 2026 arrivals that means first registered in 2019 or later; ask us for the registration year of the exact unit before you pay. New trucks are not affected.
- 04KRA duty is paid at Mombasa; keep documents consistent to avoid holds.
- 05NTSA registration follows clearance; budget for inspection and plates.
Straight answers
Is right-hand drive required?
Yes — Kenya drives on the left.
What conformity applies?
KEBS PVoC for used vehicles; check current requirements for new trucks.
Where do trucks clear?
Mombasa is the main gateway; inland transit serves the whole region.
Can I import a refurbished truck to Kenya?
Yes, if the unit meets the KEBS eight-year rule (KS 1515:2000): for 2026 arrivals it must have been first registered in 2019 or later. Special-purpose vehicles have a separate KEBS waiver route. Ask us for the registration year of the exact unit before you pay; a new truck avoids the rule. Checked October 2026; confirm with KEBS before shipping.
